The complexity of airborne laser scanning systems has increased to achieve the growing end user requirements of point density, accuracy, precision and vegetation penetration requirements. In doing so a gap has grown in translating the technical specifications of the laser scanning system into ASPRS or USGS requirements that the user operating the system must achieve in their point cloud deliverable to the end customer. Further complicating this are new application areas such as forestry where point density and ground penetration can be challenging. This study will examine how the laser scanner system technical specifications, position and orientation system specifications, and operational parameters relate to end product accuracy and vegetation penetration requirements.
