Abstract
This paper documents the approach we took to address color reproduction problems starting from several base assumptions: that the inputs to the system would come from a variety of unknown and uncharacterizable sources; that these existing images would primarily be in the form of scanned or machine-generated raster files (i.e. continuous-tone RGB); and that no color management system was available. Our goal was to develop a system that would give reasonable results on a relatively low-cost output device, despite the fact that we could not depend on calibrated inputs. We discuss the characterization and color correction techniques we used, some of the strengths and weaknesses of these techniques, how we chose to deal with the disparity of input sources, our goals for speed and colorimetric accuracy, how we dealt with some of the device limitations, and how well these goals have been met.
