Abstract
Honghe National Natural Reserve (HNNR) in the Sanjiang Plain, Northeast China, is selected for this study due to its status as an important international wetland and being threatened from the serious ecological degradation. Various multispectral images of remote sensing such as TM, SPOT, QUICKBIRD are used for both the landscape classification mapping and wetland biomass mapping. Wetland plants within the HNNR are classified into 6 ecosystem types. Digital analysis techniques of hydrological analysis and GIS spatial analysis based on the finer DEM (1:10,000) integrated with the remote sensing image interpretation are applied for biophysical information generation such as quantifying the spatial pattern of the surface water within the study area. The field work and historical statistical data are used for digital model validation and calibration, and ecological variables from temporal images coupled with those validated digital biophysical information of wetland habitat are used for comprehensively assessing the marsh wetland degradation, and a geo-information technical system framework is integrated for assessing the biophysical information, showing ecological degradation of wetlands and analyzing its driving forces. Our study indicates that 54 per cent of marsh wetland has been lost due to its degradation into the meadow wetland within HNNR in the past 30 years. The loss of suitable wetness of marsh wetland habitat causes the marsh wetland degradation. With the application of Digital Earth theories and techniques, the investigators provide a useful case study for efficient protection of wetland resources and scientific ecological monitoring from this research.
