Technological and operational improvements have steadily reduced the effective reaction time in reconnaissance scenarios, making real-time capability virtually mandatory in many reconnaissance missions. A realistic assessment of functional advantages and limitations provides perspective to promote matching of real-time imager characteristics to applications. An overview in the context of operational and utilizational philosophies discusses the pertinent system factors such as mission, performance, sensors, information transmission, image processing, displays and human factors. Additional aspects such as the man-in-the-loop problem and onboard data selection and recording are considered in terms of effectiveness, complexity and cost.
