Abstract
Two-way optical communication systems are described. These systems were designed to use the same optical subsystem for transmitting as for receiving. The large information bandwidth and narrow beam width are attributed to the use of lasers as the optical sources. Single-mode elliptical optical fiber is used as transmission medium. This fiber is capable of preserving the two orthogonally polarized modes of propagation. For applications such as linking remote television stations over a long distance, a modulated and highly collimated beam is transmitted through the atmosphere. The effects of the operating environments on the performances of laser beam acquisition is described.
