Abstract
The masking effect is expressed in terms of the visual threshold contrast of bars and disks, A very sensitive and fast psychometric method is developed for the measurement of the threshold contrast. Substantial variations of the unsharpness have relatively small influence. This may well be predicted by the noise equivalent aperture concept provided that a visual system unsharpness is also taken into account. This unsharpness may correspond to the newly developed1. visual system modulation transfer function which gives good predictions for the influence of the unsharpness of the object on the visibility. The threshold appears to be inversely proportional to the square root of the X-ray exposure rate, as is predicted by models based on the statistical variation of the noise. As apparently the perceived unsharpness is not very important, the masking effect is correctly predicted to be inversely proportional to the viewing distance.
