The effect of sharp luminance discontinuities (thin lines and edges) on the visibility of sinusoidal gratings has been measured as a function of the distance between the discontinuities and the gratings. The distance from which such a discontinuity can affect the contrast sensitivity depends on the spatial frequency of the grating itself, and can be up to several degrees for gratings of low spatial frequency. The influence of the luminance discontinuities is also a function of the luminance of the thin lines and the magnitude of the edges. No difference could be found between the effect of edges and the effect of very thin (5 min. of arc) lines on the contrast sensitivity.
