Abstract
Several industrial applications have been implemented based on a 3-D vision sensor developed by Robotic Vision Systems, Inc. (RVSI). The sensor, known as the Robo Sensor®, uses structured light and optical triangulation to obtain 3-D data in real time on surfaces within its field of view. This paper will describe the Robo Sensor vision system and some of the manufacturing tasks in which the sensors have been installed. The applications range from adaptively positioning welding robots for the General Motors car production to inspection of large propeller surfaces for the U.S. Navy. Extension of the technology to provide 3-D volumetric sensing is also presented.
