Abstract
A facsimile data compression method is presented. Using three different modes : line recognition, pattern matching and facsimile coding, it is particularly adapted to black and white technical documents containing both graphical and textual information. The use of such a method is quite interesting in electronic document storage and retrieval systems, where considerable amount of documents are to be digitized and stored. Compared to CCITT group IV two-dimensional code, the average compression ratio is about 3.9 times higher. The possible building of a common pattern library for a set of documents, instead of a library per document, allows to improve the compression for text-predominate documents. The implementation of the method on a microcomputer equipped with a high-resolution raster display showed that in spite of some slight information modifications, the quality of restitution is good, and the document decoding and display are very fast.
