Abstract
Several studies have been devoted to the optimization of the characters generated on a computer display, as observed under the best focus conditions. We show that useful information can be gathered also under degradation by defocusing. In particular, the deterioration of sharpness and the fluctuation in apparent shape are here quantified and compared. The latter effect is tentatively interpreted in terms of the coming into play of "apparent edges", with a relatively short lifeline and various possible orientations. The corresponding "line detectors" are thought to be activated when the "ends" of the segments present in the pattern become sufficiently close to each other. This may be accomplished either by increasing the viewing distance, or by increasing the size of the receptive unit by properly decreasing the adapting luminance.
