Abstract
Materials which undergo semi-conducting/conducting transitions ('Mott transitions') generally show significant changes in their optical constants at the transition. In some cases very large changes occur in the real and/or imaginary parts of the refractive index. If such materials are incorporated in optical multilayer systems, very large changes can occur in the reflection and transmission properties of the multilayers. This leads to the possibilities of designing multilayers with useful properties for devices such as optical switches and limiters and offers scope for the convenient manipulation of optical beams.
