Optical Space Communications is one area where the presence of Error Correction can fundamentally change the trade-offs facing the system designer, as we will attempt to point out. However, there are some immediate questions to be answered: i) What is Forward Error Correction? ii) How should it be regarded? iii) What can it achieve in the optical communications arena?
