Abstract
In this paper we report current research on a SYSTEMS MAP based on conceptual graph theory for representing the knowledge requirements of distributed operating systems. This knowledge-base has been used on an interactive basis for the design of an UPPER KERNEL (higher level functions such as job management) for a distributed system.2 The SYSTEMS MAP comprises knowledge about the configuration of the distributed system, services available and users enrolled. An interface to the systems map is provided via the Knowledge-Base Editor (KBE) which makes a set of functions available for both users and the system. This facilitates the creation, modification and accumulation of graphs in maintaining the systems map dynamically, as well as to search for and schedule users' requests. The semantics of conceptual graph models are useful in developing a natural language interface. A brief description of the proposed distributed system and the notion of systems objects (whose descriptions form the peripheral knowledge) is also delineated.
