A simplified adaptive linear predictive coding scheme is proposed in this paper for video applications. The least-absolute-value (L1) and the least-squares (L2) criteria are considered. The scheme uses a vector formulation similar to DPCM techniques in video coding to simplify the prediction coefficient calculation from 2-D to 1-D. Higher-order prediction is further simplied using a lattice structure, which can be viewed as a concatenation of identical first-order structures. The computation complexity of high-order prediction coefficients is thus decomposed into simple successive first-order calculation. The lattice structure also allows the stability constraints to be easily imposed, which is not the case in a general 2-D transversal formulation. The prediction error of the proposed scheme is a decreasing function of the prediction order, which shows the gain of this analytic approach over fixed predictor DPCM. The Ll scheme is more robust in the presence of noise while the L2 scheme is easier to solve computationally. Simulation results show clearly the advantages of the proposed scheme.
