A high performance solid state TV camera with auto focusing for the purpose of assembly robot containing a robot vision, automatic visual inspection and other FA (factory automa-tion) use has been developed. The focus detection method is contrast detection method by through the lens. The contrast signal is created from a video signal. The contrast detecting method which uses a video signal have the following unique features. 1. Various lenses can be mounted. 2. The focus detecting area can be arranged freely. 3. The design is very simple, as it requires a minimum of external optics componens. This automatic focusing system can be built up a flexible vision system fitted several objects, as this system has the serial interface.
