Abstract
A broad band luminescence was observed by us for Cr3+ in synthetic MgA1204 spinel. Luminescence spectra were strongly dependent on excitation wavelength. This dependence is due to the presence of two different luminescent Cr(III) centres in the spinel. The low value of Dq/B parameter (2.14) for the A site indicates on low ligand field. In view of current in-terest of Cr(III) doped crystals the MgAl204 synthetic spinel displays on attractive material for tunable laser operation.
