Abstract
If a real-time TV image processor has the task of separating moving objects from the static background in an image then this task can be performed most simply by an image subtraction if the static background is known a priori. If the background is varying in an unpredictable manner and is continually being obscured by the moving objects the task of maintaining an image which is representative of the static background is made difficult. This paper addresses the problems associated with the generation and maintainence of a back-ground image within a real-time TV image processor under varying ambient conditions.
