Abstract
There is an increasing need for an OTDR system with a centimeter scale spatial resolution capability (ie the capability of resolving signals from two target features with separation ~l cm) in short haul fiber networks and sensor systems. In order to achieve centimeter scale spatial resolution along a fiber, it is necessary to employ optical sources and detectors with response on a 100ps timescale. In this paper, we describe the results of an investigation into the limiting capability in terms of spatial resolution and return signal strength which can be achieved using both direct and photon counting methods of detecting the return signals from the fiber system under test. Appropriate models are presented for the two detection processes and the predictions of the models are compared with experimental results in selected cases; particular attention is given to the possibility of detecting Rayleigh backscattering with centimeter resolution.
