This paper presents an overview of recent work on the velocity filter approach to target detection and track initiation in infrared surveillance systems for strategic defense applications. This approach has particular advantages when the signal-to-noise ratio is very low or when the number of objects to be detected and tracked is extremely high. Furthermore, it can be implemented with a highly-efficient, parallel-processing computer architecture.
