Abstract
Isopathlength (IPL) point refers to a point on the surface of an air-bounding tissue where the intensity of diffuse reflectance light does not depend upon the reduced scattering coefficient of the tissue. IPL phenomenon serves as a self-calibration point because the intensity there is influenced by absorption regardless of the scattering and thus improves the accuracy of the optical property extraction. Using novel analytics for photon diffusion in small cylindrical domain, we assess the steady-state IPL points in three tissue geometries, including semi-infinite, concave-infinite-cylindrical, and convex-infinite-cylindrical for medical applications. The cylindrical geometries are assessed along the azimuthal and longitudinal directions.
