Abstract
This interim report describes an expert system prototype being developed to palletize boxes of unequal sizes. Finding feasible arrangements for boxes of various sizes is an important problem, particularly for distribution centers. Previous efforts have focused on palletizing equal size boxes, or on the problem of unequal size containers where the inequalities are only in two dimensions. Though useful starting points, both approaches are overly restrictive in their scope. This report describes an expert system prototype being developed at Georgia Tech that integrates domain heuristics with packing algorithms to produce optimal packing configurations. As the nature of the palletizing problem varies for each distribution center, the expert system uses several application-specific assumptions to tailor the system to a specific pallet packing approach. Results demonstrating optimal palletizing for column stacking domains are presented and future plans are outlined.
