Abstract
In this paper, we investigated the extraction of ground targets from background and clutter using CO2 LASER RADAR (LADAR) imagery. Target extraction or segmentation is a critical step in the Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) process. In this paper, we investigated the utility of various types of heuristics such as the diversity in the expected reflectance, range variations and size between military targets and natural objects to effectively extract military targets. We devised a computational efficient recursive algorithm based upon state-space technique to extract target from background. The recursive nature of the algorithm and its parallel concurrent processing will allow for real-time implementation. Computer simulation results are also presented.
