Abstract
A multi-channel solar radiometer system called the Atmospheric Optical Calibration System (AOCS) has been developed at the Solar Energy Research Institute to perform real-time measurements of the optical transmittance properties of the atmosphere at selected wavelengths within the solar spectral regime (.3 to 3 μm). These measurements are analyzed in conjunction with a simple spectral solar radiation model to calculate real-time solar spectral irradiance values. The AOCS will be used to relate existing atmospheric optical and solar radiation conditions to selected standard conditions, so that decisions can be made regarding the outdoor testing of solar energy conversion devices (i.e., photovoltaic devices/cells. The concept for this instrument was originally described by Hulstrom and Cannon.
