Abstract
The grand challenge of integrated optics comes from the materials and their compatibility. In order to achieve several distinct functions on a same chip, several materials must be combined together. This yields fabrication issues that are difficult to avoid while working at the micro- or nano-scale. Efficient proofs-of-concepts have demonstrated the well operation of very complex devices, for an everyday use, these components are costly and difficult to manufacture. We propose to discuss the advantages of strip-loaded photonics, for which the question of the guiding materials is almost not a problem. Several experimental examples will be presented.
