Oxide-free VCSELs can be reduced in cavity dimension to micron size apertures, enabling ultalow bit energy operation based on directly modulated laser operation. The oxide-free VCSEL can be used at room temperature, high temperature or cryogenic temperatures including 77 K or 4 K operation. Important applications for these optical links include extracting optical data from cryogenic focal plane array cameras, or from superconducting circuits at low temperature. Oxide-free VCSELs enable more than an order of magnitude reduction in cavity volume over oxide VCSELs, and promise high reliability for applications in data centers and cryogenic data links for military and private sector applications.
