Abstract
The development of a passive sensor for the remote detection of gases, which is based on an interferometer, is described. Unlike conventional Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (FTS), the interferometer is scanned over a very limited range of optical delays and the presence of gas is deduced airectly from the Fourier domain. Signal-to-noise calculations and laboratory experiments, using nitrogen dioxide (NO2) with visible light, are presented. These results demonstrate that this new technique has the advantages of higher sensitivity, faster scanning and a compact optical design.
