Multi-level phase coding techniques for angular multiplexed holographic data storage are developed, which could be used in data centers in IT society. Some experimental results are presented with a proto-type system for 3TB/disc storage.

Multilayer optical data storage is a promising approach for realizing high-capacity media with terabyte capacity for applications in enterprise archival data storage. We report on optical media containing 16 layers from a high-scalable multilayer polymer film co-extrusion process. Static and dynamic test data are presented as well as accelerated lifetime data, both indicating long shelf life. Other performance data such as threshold writing response, read stability presented. The data writing physics within the one-photon absorption spectrum is also presented. The impact of media lifetime, capacity roadmap and drive backward compatibility and on the economics of long-term archival storage is described.

In this talk, we will present recent advances in several organic electronic device platforms and discuss how some of these breakthroughs can impact the future of high-performance imaging systems.

A phase imaging system based on complex field sensor is analyzed, and experiments are performed to verify three methods of phase retrieval, namely, multi-wavelength digital holography, multi-aperture Zernike wavefront sensing and coherent diffractive imaging. The diffracted wavefront scattered from an object (a randomly rough surface or a surface with a known feature) is captured with a CCD in the far-field and the wavefront phase at the object surface is reconstructed using an optimized iterative algorithm. Based on the method chosen, one or two diffraction patterns were captured. The results demonstrate the potential of the proposed complex field imaging sensor for in-situ quality control of additively manufactured objects.

A BT.2020 wide color gamut is obtained using a laser backlight liquid crystal display (LCD). A conventional side-edge laser backlight requires a wide bezel area to achieve uniform brightness. We developed stacked double light guide plates, with each plate comprising light-mixing and light-emitting areas. The light-mixing area of each plate overlaps the light-emitting area of another light guide plate, thereby reducing the bezel width from 150 to 15 mm for a 17-inch LCD.

In this paper, we present a nonmechanical three-dimensional beam steering system using electrowetting based liquid lens and liquid prism. The optical design for the radius of curvature of the liquid lens and the tilting angle of the liquid prism was modeled with Zemax and three-dimensional beam steering was simulated. The liquid lens from Corning-Varioptic was used and the focal length of the lens was varied depending on the applied voltage. Cuboid-shaped chamber of the liquid prism was fabricated with glasses and two immiscible liquids whose densities are the same were injected into the fabricated chamber. The apex angle of the liquid prism and beam steering on the x-axis, y-axis, and xy-axis were measured by changing the applied voltages on the four sidewalls of the liquid prism. The light spot passing through the liquid lens and liquid prism was measured and the calculated beam steering angle was 11.6 º to 12.0 º. The effects of gravity on the shape and apex angle of the liquid prism were also measured by rotating the sample. Nonmechanical three-dimensional beam steering control including the z-axis direction was demonstrated by combining the electrowetting based liquid lens and liquid prism.

The 5G network has the advantage of ultra-high transmission bandwidth, which will accelerate the developments of new three-dimensional (3D) communication systems. Computer-generated holographic display is an ideal solution for 3D communication because it could provide realistic 3D effect. Currently, only the amplitude of the wavefront, rather than the phase, is recorded by the traditional image capture system, which could not provide 3D information for the 3D computer-generated holographic display. Based on the light-field camera, a capture system employed in the computergenerated holographic display is developed. It could calculate position of every object point, and render the point-cloud model of the target 3D object. The layer-based angular-spectrum method is also employed in this capture system to calculate the computer-generated holograms (CGHs) of the 3D object. Simulations and experiments have verified that the proposed capture system is able to utilize the transmission bandwidth of 5G network. The proposed system realizes quasi real-time output of large size CGHs. The reconstruction quality of these CGHs is preferable. The proposed capture system for 3D holographic communication would have a broad application prospect through further optimizations and developments.

Holographic near-eye displays (NEDs) have large potential for augmented reality (AR) devices as they modulate the wavefront of light. They can provide observers with comfortable three-dimensional (3D) views with focus-cues, and little optical aberrations since the unwanted phase delay added by optical systems can be compensated by wavefront modulation. With the advent of ultra-high-definition (UHD) spatial light modulator (SLM), a degree of freedom in designing holographic NEDs has been further expanded. Here, we introduce several holographic NEDs using UHD SLM. The holographic NED using an HOE is introduced for the optical see-through display. Besides, the holographic NED with enlarged eye-box using point-source array and eye-tracking method will be presented. Finally, the holographic NED of which optical aberration is compensated by Zernike’s polynomial adaptation will be introduced.

A see-through light-field 3D display that works in head-up configuration is being presented. The display system consists of only a commercial projector and a holographic screen and works on the principle of Integral Imaging. The holographic screen is a volume hologram that is digitally fabricated, which functions as a micro concave- mirror array. The screen also has other optical functions embedded that helps to eliminate the bulk of optical components needed otherwise. This significantly simplifies the system, there by taking it closer to the consumer market. A color 3D scene of size 20cm x 10cm x 5cm (depth) has been successfully reproduced and can be seen through naked eye for a viewing angle of 10-degrees.

Recent developments in ultra-high-definition (UHD) displays have a major impact on holographic displays as well as conventional display systems. A spatial light modulator (SLM) can reproduce hologram data through wavefront modulation of the incident light, and a holographic printer can record a high-quality hologram by sequentially recording a number of holograms reproduced by the SLM on a holographic material. As UHD (4K) resolution SLMs have been popularized, higher quality holograms can be reproduced compared to previous 2K resolution SLMs. When applied to the holographic printer, it is possible to manufacture holographic optical elements (HOEs) having a multifunctioning property and a wide field of view. In this paper, we introduce the holographic printer system using an amplitude UHD SLM and its applications. The holographic printer consists of optical systems to generate high-quality hologram from UHD SLM and mechanical systems to record the hologram on holographic material. The details of the total system are introduced. Furthermore, we introduce a holographic near-eye display system using UHD SLM and an image combiner HOE which is manufactured by the holographic printer.

Higher quality video formats such as 4K/8K have emerged. Since these video formats require high speed communication which cannot be done with commercial copper cables to transmit uncompressed live video without latency, optical communication has been expected as an ideal solution. However, conventional silica optical fibers are not suitable to be handled by consumers for such high-speed short-reach applications, because of their fragileness and difficulties in precision connections at low cost. We propose a novel optical interconnect using a graded-index plastic optical fiber (GI POF) with each end having a glass spherical collimator lens uniquely fabricated by low-cost ballpoint pen technologies. As one of promising applications of the interconnect, improved 8K endoscope camera and its CCU (Camera Control Unit) will be discussed for medical use. At an operation room in a hospital, surgeons need to handle the camera. Video cables are inserted, bended, removed, and exchanged frequently during the operation. Silica optical fibers are not flexible for such frequent handling application. To overcome the problems, optical modules, optoelectronic composite cables using GI POF, and the ballpoint-pen interconnect were developed. Using the system, 8K video from the endoscope camera was successfully transmitted at our verification experiments.

Using our 8K ultra-high definition (UHD, 7680 x 4320 pixels) video technology with 16-times resolution compared with the conventional HD endoscopic/microscopic camera (1920 x 1080 pixels), not only surgeons but also all medical staff in the operating room could observe small suture thread, capillaries, lymphatic vessels, thin membrane structures and important nerve fibers which have been hard to see clearly. We believe that our 8K-UHD surgical devices are very likely to lead to major changes in the future of medical practice, not only in typical endoscopic/microscopic surgery but also in novel surgical fields.

For the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, NHK is preparing 8K devices for 8K regular broadcasting. However, the equipment is in the early stages of development; therefore, it is necessary to continue improving their performance and operability. Particularly, the sizes of the cameras and lenses are larger than those for HDTV. Furthermore, handling uncompressed data is challenging because of the sheer size of the data. In this presentation, we introduce the current 8K UHDTV technologies that are closely related to photonics technology and the challenges for its development. Moreover, we describe our expectations for the research and development in the field of photonics.

Focusing difficulty has become a critical issue in 8K ultra-high definition television (UHDTV) production. Especially in 8K high-speed shooting, defocus blur significantly degrades a user's experience of slow-motion playback video. For this reason, incorporating a sensor-based phase detection autofocus (PDAF) system that can adjust the focus of a lens quickly into an 8K UHDTV camera has been strongly desired. Although conventional sensor-based PDAF systems have been designed for single-chip cameras capable of using optional color filters, the application of phase detection (PD) in professional broadcasting cameras with three-chip imaging has not been studied, in which incident light separates into three color components (red, green, and blue) by a separation prism. This paper presents an investigation into the PD property among the color channels using a newly prototyped 1.25-inch 8K 240-fps complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor with two types of horizontal PD pixels (left- and right-phase). Our experiment showed that crosstalk over angler responses of the PD sensor became larger as the wavelength of light increased, and that the crosstalk in each color component reduced the accuracy of the PD amount between a set of stereo images. Consequently, these results demonstrated that utilizing the phase-differential information from the blue component enables a high-precision sensor-based PDAF operation in three-CMOS imaging when shooting black and white objects

Multifocal displays which physically float multiple focal planes are one of the promising solutions to provide focus cues for near-eye displays. With respect to the focal plane arrangements, several works proposed to dynamically change focal plane configuration as it could efficiently cover wide depth range with a few focal planes to reduce focusing error. Although they optimize the plane locations based on the resultant retinal images for target volumetric scenes, computational loads to synthesize retinal images become significantly larger as the resolution of target contents increases. Here, we propose to exploit the deep neural network to figure out the optimized focal plane configuration without directly depicting resultant retinal images. We demonstrate that designed network computes the focal plane positions to achieve optimal retinal images through numerical simulations.
