17 April 2020 Infrared and visible images fusion based on wavelet transform

The fusion of infrared and visible images based on wavelet transform depends on the fusion rules of wavelet coefficients. By comparing the common fusion method of maximum selection, weighted mean and method based on region energy, It was concluded that when the low-frequency coefficients were taken as the mean value and the high-frequency coefficients were taken by method based on regional energy, the better effect could be obtained when the image contrast was better. But under the condition of poor illumination, the fusion effect of this method was worse. To solve the problem, the method that the visible image was enhanced before wavelet transform was proposed in the paper. Simple histogram equalization was used to enhance the image, then the low-frequency coefficients were fused according to the mean value, and the high-frequency coefficients were fused according to the method based on regional energy. The experimental results show that this method could effectively improve the fusion effect of infrared and visible light images, and it was superior to the traditional method in both subjective evaluation and objective evaluation indexes based on information entropy, clarity, standard deviation.
