Abstract
Based on regular studies performed in the coastal waters of the Black Sea within the area of the Sevastopol and Southern Coast of Crimea for the first time during the period from 2000 to 2010, the seasonal dynamics of the ratio between organic carbon and chlorophyll a (C/Chl a) in phytoplankton within the surface layer (0–0.5 m) were analyzed. The maximal values of this parameter (234±139) were observed in summer and the minimal values (56±23) – in winter. Intermediate values of C/Chl a were registered during spring and autumn. The main reasons for the variability of this ratio are the factors of light, nutrients, and the phytoplankton cell’s taxonomic structure and size variability. The results obtained should be considered when developing regional algorithms for calculating the C/Chla ratio based on satellite data.
