Abstract

A method for interpreting data of multi-frequency lidar sensing is developed. Combination of the signals caused by elastic and Raman scattering provides a plausible determination of the aerosol optical and microphysical characteristics. The absence of Raman scattering allows one to separate aerosol layers with different scattering properties followed by an estimation of the lidar ratio and Ångström parameters within individual layers. Correct retrieval of the complex refractive index and particle size distribution function is permissible if the air mass moves along coincident backward trajectories at different times of daytime observations.
