Quantum well infrared photodetector (QWIP) technology is an established solution for tactical imaging in the longwave infrared (LWIR), thanks to its unmatched image uniformity, stability and pixel operability (typically >99.9 %). In this paper, we demonstrate that these qualities also make it a versatile platform for other advanced detection applications in this spectral range. First, the development of dual-band (10 and 10.8 µm) QWIP IDDCA as part of the technology demonstrator LisR [1] onboard the International Space Station (ISS) is followed up. Second, enhancement of the object detection in the field studies using polarimetric QWIP imager is presented. Finally, the manufacturability of QWIP focal plane arrays (FPAs) is illustrated by showing the performance statistics from the production of the large-area (16×12 mm2 ) and the small-pitch (15 μm) FPAs and uniformity of their characteristics over 4” detector wafers.
