Abstract
We investigate the connection between losses of a guided mode and polarisation of the associated evanescent waves in the Poincaré sphere, demonstrating a ``polarization-loss locking'' in analogy to spin-momentum locking. From Fermi's golden rule, we investigate its implications for near-field directional coupling, via the introduction of a complex angular spectrum formalism. The use of complex wave-vector in the spectrum inspired us to investigate a method of achieving improved transmission of light across optically opaque materials by introducing a passive metasurface with a varying transmission phase and amplitude simultaneously.
