1 May 1990 Diode laser radar: applications and technology

Several alternative modulation waveforms and associated device technologies available for diode laser radar are described. These, included pulsed intensity modulation, discrete frequency intensity modulation, linear chirped optical frequency modulation, and intensity modulation with linear chirp of the modulation frequency. Ladar performance relations that determine range-measurement resolution, absolute range capability, and measurement time or data rate in terms of the critical design parameters are discussed. The design parameters include laser chirp bandwidth, modulation frequency, optical coherence length, laser and receiver noise sources, optical power, and receiver/processor data rate.
