Abstract
A new method of distance measurement using frequency chirped optical radiation is discussed, and contrasted with other techniques. This measurement is by a phase-based method, rather than as an amplitude-based technique. The conventional frequency chirped coherent scheme uses an amplitude measurement of Fourier harmonics to determine the distance information. The proposed new method takes advantage of the ease with which optical phase can be measured. The proposed system relies upon the use of line-narrowed laser diodes with external cavities. The ease of obtaining such optical line narrowing offers the possibility of achieving an extended range and/or a high resolution (in the micrometer range, if necessary).
