15 June 2023 Power-efficient low-latency large-format FPA development using event-driven readout

Abstract
Contemporary large-format EO/IR camera systems have several shortcomings as related to 1) their compromise on power or frame rate , 2) their high latency to read out a pixel which impacts their use in tracking applications, and 3) excessive data produced that overload embedded processing. These issues are even more pronounced in space applications which have limited cooling budget, have limited bandwidth, and have limited on-board processing capability. This paper presents a novel low SWAP-C event based ROIC architecture developed to alleviate these issues in large format FPAs. A prototype ROIC developed demonstrates the capability in a 512x512 format with 30um pixel pitch. The ROIC is designed to be stitched up to 4K x 4K array sizes with a 15um pitch. The event based ROIC allows regular frame based imaging, as well as event readout with latencies as low as 20us, while simultaneously reducing system power in hyper-temporal applications by an order of magnitude.
