Abstract
The electrical and optical characteristics of a 12 kW transverse flow C02-laser with rf excitation will be discussed. The rf discharge with its bulk plasma and the electric boundary layers covering the ceramic electrodes are analysed on the basis of refined measurements of the complex discharge impedance. The dissipative influence of the electrical boundary layers on the electrodes is deduced from heat balances. The phase distribution in the discharge zone measured with a Mach Zehnder interferometer characterizes the optical effect of the gas density gradient in flow direction. Measured small signal gain distributions give the optimum location of the double pass unstable resonator. The overall performance of the system will be demonstrated by the measured output power and the far field intensity distribution.
