Abstract
This paper is concerned with mechanisms in near infrared lasers in the 1 to 3tm region and mainly with flashlamp excitation. It explores two types of laser, based on rare earth doping in crystal host media- eg Er:YAG, Cr:Er:YSGG and Cr:Tm:Ho:YAG, or on rare earth doping into glassy media prepared by the sol-gel process.
