Solid state lasers gain importance in the field of material processing due to the recent increase of output power up to more than 1 kW. In comparison with the C02-laser the main technological advantages are the shorter wavelength, respective the higher beam absorption of metal surfaces and the possibility of beam transmission through a fibre. With regard to both benefits the effects on cutting and welding are investigated and prospects to the technological and economical advantages of the solid state laser are presented.
