An overview of our advances towards the development of fiber optic based
Smart Structures will be presented, including our work on the development
and testing of an aircraft wing leading edge with a structurally integrated
fiber optic damage assessment system, the development and testing of a
Fabry-Perot strain rosette, studies of acoustic emission within composites
materials detected by embedded fiber optic sensors and a comparison of
sensory and vision based structural deformation systems.
