1 June 1991 Efficient extraction of local myocardial motion with optical flow and a resolution hierarchy

Abstract
The authors develop methods for the recovery of myocardial motion from two dimensional echocardiograms, (2DE). Echocardiograms are sonograms of a beating heart. Echocardiography is an important, widely used, non-invasive tool in the diagnosis of heart disease. The authors attempt to measure the velocity of local motion to help separate myocardial regions from blood volume and to classify the behavior of those regions. Multiresolution methods have not been applied to estimation of the local motion in non-rigid highly textured imagery such as 2DE. Earlier work uses the method of optical flow after applying a large median filter to the 2DE. Optical flow estimates the apparent two dimensional velocity in a sequence of images from brightness changes between successive images. A study of the application of optical flow at several resolutions is presented. Results indicate which resolutions are most appropriate for optical flow.
