1 August 1991 Model-based analysis of 3-D spatial-temporal IR clutter suppression filtering

Multi-frame 3D linear filtering is a powerful technique for IR target enhancement in the presence of clutter, with important applications such as the detection of small, dim targets in a long-range infrared search and track (IRST) system. While the benefit of an adaptive 3D filter has been demonstrated on specific clutter scenes in the past, a systematic analysis of its performance behavior has been lacking. This paper presents an analysis of optimal 3D filter gain versus target and background characteristics, as well as the sensitivity of this gain to mismatch. The analysis is based on parametric models of target and background, devised to capture the essential features of each. Practical approximations to the optimal 3D filter are also examined, and their performance penalty evaluated.
