Abstract
The tracking lag due to an accelerating or maneuvering target may become significant compared to sensor noise, especially in the case of highly accurate optical or IR line-of-sight measurements. The authors construct a maneuver detector by utilizing an adaptive gain alpha- beta filter and analytic formulations for the tracking residuals. Maneuver detection is accomplished by examining tracking error residuals and comparing with expected results. The use of an alpha-beta filter also serves as a tracking function with gains controlled by the output of the detector and sensed tracking lags. Numerical simulations showing tracking improvement over fixed gain alpha-beta and alpha-beta-gamma filters are given.
