Abstract
A method based on the principle of moiré technique will be presented which enables determination of the displacement vector in the plane of the cross section of cylindrical shells or other objects with convex cylindrical surfaces. An unidirectional grid is applied to the surface parallel to the axis of revolution. The projections of the grid on a plane perpendicular to the direction of observation in the undeformed and in the deformed state are expressed mathematically. After superimposing both these grids by double exposure technique the evaluation of the resulting moiré fringes yield the component of the displacement vector perpendicular to the direction of observation; from the results of two different directions of observation the displacement vector will be calculated finally.
