Abstract
This paper deals with the technique of scattered light photoelasticity, used to determine three dimensional stress distribution in transparent, birefringent materials. A novel implementation of the technique using materials that exhibit permanent birefringence in addition to stress induced birefringence is discussed. The basic equations of photoelasticity are derived and then application to both transmitted light photoelasticity and scattered light photoelasticty are described. Finally, some examples of the application of scattered light photoelasticity are discussed.
