It has become apparent that the compactly supported wavelet bases of Daubechies are susceptible to far-reaching generalizations which provide a remarkable synthesis and unification of digital signal processing and applied mathematics. Examples of this wider class of wavelet-unified digital filters and mathematical representations have already proved themselves in applications as diverse as signal compression for imagery and audio, channel coding, and the numerical solution of partial differential equations. In this paper we systematize the definitions and illustrate some of the associated wavelet functions and their principal properties.
