Abstract
A morphological algorithm for automated interpolation between contour lines is presented. Algorithms based on morphological transforms allow interpolation to be performed directly in image space without the need to explicitly extract or represent contour data using intermediate data structures. Image space operations also allow parallel generation of interpolated contour values while making essential use of neighboring contour morphology. Recursive morphological transforms allow all contour intervals to be processed in constant time regardless of width. For m intercontour intervals, the number of contours calculated in parallel increases O(2m) with each recursion. The algorithm is applied successfully to a variety of synthetic nested (nonoverlapping) contours as well as overlapping and/or displaced contours. It is also applied to naturally occurring contours extracted from medical scans. The special case of branching is handled automatically without algorithm modification.
