14 September 1993 Multiresolution registration for volume reconstruction in microscopical applications

Abstract
This paper describes a software method for the analysis of 3D histological volumes from microscopical series of consecutive sections. Image segmentation and geometrical registration are the processes that must be performed for the present approach. The former is a necessary prerequisite for finding correspondences among the various slices of a single object; the latter deals with the actual determination of geometrical parameters that enable one to correctly stack the sections to reconstruct the original 3D volume. The same spatial sequence is acquired at different resolution to better detect any internal structure. Once the sections have been registered, it is possible to follow the topological evolution of the microstructures inside the space of the tissue sample.
