Abstract
Research into the development of smart structures and materials has begun to coalesce from a number of subfields into a distinct discipline of its own. A common philosophical framework for the field has yet to be achieved, however, due to the interdisciplinary nature of the activities involved. In this paper, an exploration of such a framework is carried out and related to the development of instrumentation architecture development for future smart structures.
