Abstract
At the Garching stellarator W 7 -AS, the existing 70 GHz/0.8 MW/3 sec ECRH system is presently upgraded to a heating system which operates at 140 GHz (second harmonic), finally with a total power of about 2 MW. Both techniques discussed for high-power millimeter-wave transmission beyond 100 GHz, namely corrugated circular HEll waveguides as well as quasi-optical beam waveguides for propagation of the TEM00 mode are going to be used. In a first step, a beam waveguide transmission system was built and fed with a 100 kW/400 ms gyrotron developed by KfK [1]. Its TE03 output mode was transformed by means of an external Vlasov converter with 70 mm waveguide diameter and a length of 1.6 m to a Gaussian beam. Details can be found in [2].
