Abstract
Since the original free electron laser (FEL) experiments of Madey and his co- workers, the generation of coherent radiation from a relativistic electron beam has been widely studied. It quickly became evident that the success of an electron beam driven source depends critically upon the quality of the electron beam itself. For this reason Dr. Madey and his co-workers developed an electron gun specifically to function as the injector for the Mark III FEL [1]. With the collaboration of the Duke University Free Electron Laser Laboratory, we at NCCU have developed an electron gun based upon the original Madey design but intended to serve as stand-alone electron beam source. The results is a compact, "table-top" source of a high quality electron beam which can be used as a test bed to explore techniques for generating radiation in the far infrared (FIR).
